Federal, State and local regulations, and good business practices
dictate management and detailed reporting on the acquisition, inventory,
use and disposition of hazardous materials.
Hazardous materials and substances - any material requiring an Material Safety Data Sheet under OSHA's Hazard
Communication Standard is regulated and must be inventoried. More specific categories like carcinogens require
special management. EPA regulations define other sets of Extremely Hazardous Substances, Hazardous Air Pollutants,
Toxic Air Contaminants and other categories.
In many US regions, anyone who handles over 55 gallons, 500lbs. or 200 cubic feet of any
hazardous material, OR any quantity of specific materials, OR anyone
remodeling or constructing a facility that requires a building permit...
has reporting requirements.
